Food For Thought: Ladies and Gentlemen

In Jewish life and in American culture, gender is an issue in flux. As gay marriage is legalized (and as some refuse to bake cakes for them), as non-gender-specific bathrooms are available (and violence against transgender individuals increases), and as Orthodox women are ordained (and some gatekeepers of Orthodoxy cry foul), we will use this weekly gathering to consider some of the issues and an array of possible Jewish responses to them. This will be a safe space. Lunch will be served.

Classes will include:

• Gender and Leadership - How we have progressed, and how we are still stuck

• The pros and cons of dividing genders

• Gender essentialism - should there be gender roles

• Modesty and dress

• Rape culture and responsibility

• Gay marriage

• “Other” - Changing genders and gender flexibility
