Alternative Winter Break (AWB)

MIT Hillel’s Alternative Winter Break trips (AWBs) involve travel, service learning, education, and cultural exploration internationally. Participants will have the opportunity to engage deeply with Global Jewish Peoplehood. While exploring different Jewish communities abroad, students will not only connect to the rich tapestry of Jewish history, they will also be immersed in the vibrant Jewish communities of today and be challenged to think more deeply about what the future holds for these communities. 

Winter trip from Dec. 28th - January 8th

AWB: Argentina - This is a uniquely crafted experience tailored specifically for MIT Undergraduate students.

During this Alternative Winter Break trip, participants will make meaningful connections with Argentina’s Jewish community and gain invaluable insight into its historical and modern presence through engaging with the vibrant Jewish community and Argentine culture of Buenos Aires. Participants will learn about the challenges and opportunities facing the people of Buenos Aires through interactive site visits. 

Topics covered during our exploration of Jewish life in Argentina will include:

  • The Sephardic Portuguese Crypto-Jews during the Colonial Era
  • Eastern European Jewish immigration to Argentina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries
  • Yiddish in Buenos Aires
  • The Jewish Gauchos of the Pampas
  • Antisemitism in Argentina;  the two terroist attacks of 1992 and 1994
  • The Argentinian Jewish community’s connection to Israel
  • Exchanges with the Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jewish communities of Argentina and meeting with local leaders & peers
  • An exploration of current issues and challenges facing Jews in Argentina today
  • Plenty of free time to explore the sites and neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Rosario, Sante Fe
     
This immersive experience is generously subsidized by MIT Hillel. Participants will have to pay a program fee of approximately $1,600*
*Program fee of $1,000 + domestic flight to Miami (we estimate approximately $600 roundtrip from Boston).
 

Applications will be accepted through Midnight, September 21, 2022. Accepted participants must commit to the trip and pay their program fee no later than October 6, 2022.

Included in program:

  • Round Trip international airfare from Miami to Buenos Aires
  • All activities and site visits listed in your program itinerary
  • Full-time bilingual in-country Trip Leaders
  • All meals while in Argentina
  • All domestic group transportation
  • All tips for drivers, local guides, restaurant attendants for group meals, etc.
  • Housing accomodations in Argentina and Miami (if needed)

Not included in program:

  • Flights to/from Miami, our departure city
  • Any items not explicitly mentioned above or listed in the program itinerary
